Gaston Junck

Gaston Junck was born on the 30th of April 1923 in Luxembourg-City. At the beginning of the war in 1939, he lived in Beggen, a suburb of Luxembourg-City. He worked as a cook before he was forced to enter the Reichsarbeitsdienst and the German Armed Forces on the 6th January 1943. He was sent to Poland and Belarus. On the 10th of November 1943, the Russian armies in Vitebsk (Belarus) captured him. From November 1943 until the 15th of July 1944, the prisoner Gaston Junck fought for the Soviet Union against Nazi-Germany. From the end of July 1944 until the 15th May 1945, he was detained at the Tambow-Rada prisoner of war camp. On the same day he escaped, together with a huge number of Luxembourgers. He arrived in Luxembourg on the 12th of June 1945.

Alphonse Niederweis

Alphonse Niederweis was born on the 2nd of August 1922 in Bech, in Eastern Luxembourg. Alphonse Niederweis lived in Grevenmacher at the beginning of the war, where he cultivated a small farm together with his parents. On the 23rd of  February 1942 he was forced to enter the Reichsarbeitsdienst. He was placed in Peenemünde in Northern Germany until the 14th  of January 1943. On this day he was forced to join the German Armed Forces. Between January and August 1943 he was deployed in the Czech Republic and Belarus. On the 29th of August 1943, Alphonse Niederweis was captured in Stalino (Ukraine) by the Russian army. Before he arrived in Tambow-Rada on the 21th of May 1944, he was trapped in Ischewsk in Russia. On the 8th of October 1945 Alphonse Niederweis began his return journey to Luxembourg, which he reached two days later on the 10th of October 1945.

Emile Roegel

Emile Roegel was born in 1925 in Schiltigheim, a small village in Alsace in France. At the beginning of the war, Emile Roegel was 14 years old and still at school.  On the 15th of February 1943 he was forced to enter the Reichsarbeitsdienst in Rudolstadt. In the same year he was captured by the Russian armies an he was sent to Tambow-Rada. It is not clear when exactly he entered and left the camp.

Raymond Thommes

Raymond Thommes was born on the 24th of April 1924 in Remerschen, located in the municipality of Schengen. He was the firstborn and had four sisters. In 1936 his father died and so he couldn’t go to university. He had to stay at home helping his mother to organise her wine business. On the 12th of February he had to join the Reichsarbeitsdienst. He was based in Schlesien. In May 1943 he had to join the Wehrmacht where he fought on the eastern front. In December 1943 an artillery shell injured his face, as a consequence he had to stay for two months in a military hospital in Minsk located in Belorussia. In June 1944 he fought again at the eastern front but he was eventually detained at Tambow on the 29th of August. End of September 1945 he began his return to Luxembourg with other Luxembourgish prisoners. They finally arrived in October 1945.

Joseph Steichen-Regenwetter

Joseph Steichen-Regenwetter was born on the 7th of August 1922 in Weimerskirch, in Luxembourg-City. He worked as a fitter after he did his apprenticeship in the Institut Emile Metz in Dommeldingen, a suburb of Luxembourg-City. Before he was forced to enter the reichsarbeitsdienst in Pologne, he was imprisoned in Luxembourg-Grund between the first and the 24th September 1942. Between January and August 1943 Joseph Steichen was forced to join the German Armed Forces, initially at Stuttgart, then he was sent to Dolbino in Russia.
