10th September 1944 is the official date for the liberation of Luxembourg. American troops liberated the entire Grand-Duchy after the German army fled the country almost without fighting.

However – during the month of December – the Battle of the Bulge partially took place in the Northern region of Luxembourg and the region around Echternach. Although not the whole country was declared a war zone, the population had to deal with fleeing people and the fear of bombings again.

The Grand-Duchess of Luxembourg only returned on 14th April 1945.
