The air wave liberalisation in the 1990s and the appearance of new radio stations like DNR, Eldoradio and Radio socio-culturelle, obliged Radio Luxemboug to rethink its program schedule. As a result the station provided its audience with news twice an hour, with an expert-developped animation program, magazines and radio games.
RTL’s TV channel found itself confronted with the same issue. Being concurrenced by international channels, RTL created its own luxemburgish primtime. In 1995, Luxembourgers could enjoy 1 hour of national news through RTL’s new city-tv program called “1 Stonn fier Letzebuerg” broadcasted from 7 to 8 pm.
The popularity of luxembourgish programs and the will to promote them, let to the creation of a multitude of luxembourgish shows from the late 1990s onwards. Programs included casting shows like “Wanns de eppes kanns”, sitcoms like “Weemseesdeet”, the children channel “TirliTV” and even the Simpsons broadcasted in luxembourgish. The french speaking audience though was not neglected, as RTL launched “5 minutes”, a short french version of the news.
